Getting the family involved at The Center for Eating Disorders.
Family Therapy has proven to be an important element in the treatment of patients with eating disorders. Studies have shown that often change within an adolescent's family needs to happen to allow change within the adolescent.
Our Center for Eating Disorders therapists educate parents and families.
We think it's important for patients and families to learn about the causes, consequences and recovery process of eating disorders. Through therapy, families come to discover how change in how they communicate, manage conflict, tolerate negative emotions or support autonomy can aid recovery.
Our inpatient and partial hospital programs hold family therapy sessions twice a week, with family teleconferences for families outside the region. We also offer weekly family support groups, where different families can share and explore feelings and experiences. Our parent workshop teaches communication techniques, and ways to support and adapt to the family member's return home.
In the intensive outpatient program, parents or other significant family members have the opportunity to join the patient for dinner. After the meal, they have an opportunity to explore family issues and feedback from other families and patients in a multi-family therapy group.
